About Commander AI

Commander AI is an AI-powered Magic: The Gathering deck builder for the Commander (EDH) format. You describe what you want and it builds, analyzes, and refines through conversation — grounded in real card data and expert strategy content, not AI guesses. EDHREC tells you what's popular. We try to tell you what's right for your deck.

Every recommendation traces back to a verified Scryfall card, EDHREC synergy data from millions of real decklists, Commander Spellbook combos, the comprehensive rules, and the kind of strategic reasoning that usually lives only in podcast backlogs you'll never find time for.

Why I built it

I tried using ChatGPT for deck building and it was hit-or-miss — confidently wrong about card text, mana costs, color identity, and bracket constraints. Half the time it would recommend a Game Changer for a casual deck or suggest a card my commander can't even cast. I wanted something that was right more of the time.

I'm also a busy parent with two young kids. The hours I used to spend brewing on Moxfield, scrolling EDHREC threads, and chasing down the latest set spoilers aren't really there anymore. Commander AI is the tool I wanted for myself: a second opinion that's always available, grounded in actual data, and better than asking randos on the internet. It started as a way to learn agentic AI on the side — and turned into the way I keep brewing despite real life.

Meet the builder

Jason Belk, builder of Commander AI

Jason Belk

Longtime Commander player, software engineer by day, builder of AI side projects in the cracks of the day. Commander AI is built between feedings and bedtimes, on the same brewing instincts that got me into Magic in the first place.

How it works

Commander AI is trained on tens of thousands of hours of expert MTG strategy content and integrates EDHREC synergy data, Commander Spellbook combos, Scryfall card data, and the MTG comprehensive rules. When you ask it about a deck, it doesn't guess from training memory — it looks up the actual card, checks the actual rules, and reasons against the actual deck composition. Every card it references resolves to a real Scryfall entry. If the AI tries to recommend a card that doesn't exist or breaks your commander's color identity, a guardrail catches it before you see it.

Friends and partners

Commander AI's first batch of users came through a friend at Mana Pool. When you click a "Buy" link in the app, it routes through Mana Pool's affiliate program — that's how the project pays for the API bills, the hosting, and the hours it takes to keep shipping. No subscription, no paywall, no usage meter. If you want to back the project beyond clicking through to a cart, the support page has Patreon and Ko-fi options.
